Enjoy a classic steam journey on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, followed by a relaxing afternoon exploring the historic seaside charm of Whitby. 🚂🌊

Departing promptly at 12:00 noon from Pickering Station, your journey aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a wonderfully nostalgic experience from the moment the steam locomotive eases out of the station. Sit back and relax as you travel through the heart of the North York Moors National Park, passing rolling moorland, dense woodland and deep valleys along the historic Esk Valley. Highlights along the route include the beautifully restored Levisham Station, dramatic views through Newton Dale, and the famous Goathland Station, instantly recognisable from Heartbeat and the Harry Potter films. The journey continues past Grosmont, home to the railway’s workshops, before following the River Esk towards the coast, arriving into Whitby at approximately 2:00 pm.

On arrival at Whitby Station, you will have around three hours of free leisure time to enjoy this much-loved seaside town at your own pace. Wander the atmospheric harbour and watch fishing boats come and go, explore the narrow cobbled streets filled with independent shops and cafés, or sample Whitby’s world-famous fish and chips. You may wish to visit the dramatic ruins of Whitby Abbey, enjoy panoramic coastal views from the clifftop, stroll along the sandy beach, or browse the town’s maritime and literary heritage linked to Captain Cook and Dracula. With rail travel, scenery, and the full experience all included in the price, this is a truly memorable day out combining classic steam rail travel with the charm of one of Yorkshire’s finest coastal towns.

A little more about the railway......
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is one of the most famous and beloved heritage railways in the United Kingdom - offering steam and classic diesel train journeys through stunning countryside in the North York Moors National Park in North Yorkshire, England.

🚂 What It Is

  • A heritage steam and diesel railway that lets you ride historic trains through picturesque moorland scenery.

  • The line runs roughly 24 miles (39 km) between Pickering and Whitby, passing through villages such as Levisham, Newton Dale, Goathland and terminating at Grosmont (with many services extending to Whitby).

  • It’s run by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Trust, a volunteer-led charity dedicated to preserving the railway’s history and operations.

📍 Historic Background

  • The NYMR follows much of the route of the original Whitby and Pickering Railway, one of Yorkshire’s earliest lines, first opened in 1836.

  • After closure in the 1960s, the preserved railway reopened between Grosmont and Pickering in 1973 and has since become one of the most popular heritage railways in the world.
